CENTENARY MONZA-LECCO RAILWAY

In 1887 Promotion Committee for Lambro railway had been grounded. Purpose was to build a railway that would be joined Como, Monza, Lecco. After some bureaucratic problems foundation stone was laid. In 1900 definitive project was approved, Municipal administration in Besana Brianza supported it economically. Molteno had become the terminal because it was already served by line Como-Lecco.

1906 Anonymous Society for Brianza Centrale railway had been set. Railway Nord Milano were already major shareholder, in order to have money for new line building. Works began on the 29th September 1907, the line was inaugurated on the 14th October 1911, it was 29,2 km long. Regular service began on the 15th October 1911 managed by FBC (Brianza railway) and FNM (Nord Milano railway).

In 1922 travels train arrived till to Milan Central Station and in 1924 to Lecco. During the sixties line risked closure but it remained open thanks to people and local administrators, but it had big limitations, for example train couldn’t run more than 30 km/h because binary was in poor conditions.

At the beginning of eighties line arrived till to Sesto San Giovanni, connection with Milan Underground – Line 1 has been created. In 1999 University Milano-Bicocca has been built, line arrived till to Milano-Greco Pirelli. In 2000 the terminal was located in Milano Porta Garibaldi station, “three parks train” has been created.
